Talks for everyone - The History of Brewing in Norfolk
Village Hall
Tuesday 8th of July 2025 19:30 - 21:30
In this talk Mary Fewster will look at the development of brewing from domestic production by ‘ale-wives’, which continued into the 19th century ‘ale-house kitchens’ common in many villages, to the larger scale production needed for monastic houses and country houses.
We follow the development of town breweries with their growing numbers of tied houses and the gradual amalgamations into a few large county or nation-wide companies such as Bullards, Lacons and Watneys, and end by looking at the revival of ‘craft breweries’ taking the story full circle.
